While not all call center jobs are the same, you need to have these talents no matter where you work.

What is a call center?

Almost every major company has a call center, whether it's local or around the world. Most companies use call centers to provide phone (and sometimes chat or email) support for the products or services they sell. And they need people like you to man the phones to help customers.

Multitask

Are you able to surf Netflix, eat spaghetti and text your friends at the same time (outside of work hours, of course)? Great. In the call center, you can juggle multiple tasks without breaking a sweat.

Problem Solving

Okay, if one train is going west at 85 MPH and another is going east at 72 MPH - just kidding!

You don't have to be a math whiz to work in a call center, but you do have to have a sense of problem solving. Quick thinking and solving complex customer problems within minutes are the name of the game here. In most cases, the answers will be common sense and follow company guidelines or scripts, but finding the right solution will take some thinking.

Computer skills

You know your way around your smartphone, but you'll also need to know basic computer programs to work in a call center. You'll have a computer in front of you every day, so it's important that you know how to use it.

Become familiar with computer programs such as Windows, Excel, and the Microsoft Office Suite in general. You should also have basic typing skills. Typing faster can save you time when entering client information and notes into the system.
