If you look up the technical terms for the instrumental families the percussion family that you speak of is actually called the membranophone which as you can imagine is an instrument that produces a sound by way of vibrating stretched membrane, such as a drum. The Chordophone produces sound by vibrating strings or strings stretched between two points.

Registered: 9/27/2007 | posted: 1/7/2008 at 1:51:31 PM ET I see your argument, but where do percussion instruments such as the marimba and xylophone, the claves, the cabasa, the triangle, and many other instruments of the percussion family fall? A membranophone is only one very small part of the percussion family. Traditionally, the piano is cosidered to be part of the percussion family.
