I am a fragment of my imagination NANA Anonymous Anonymous Poster From Internet Network: 65.6.149.x posted: 5/19/2007 at 12:52:59 AM ET Quarter note - 1 beat; dotted quarter note - 1 1/2 beats 1 + 1/2 (half of 1) = 1 1/2 Half note - 2 beats; dotted half note - 3 beats 2 + 1 (half of 2) = 3 Whole note - 4 beats; dotted whole note - 6 beats 4 + 2 (half of 4) = 6 A dot adds half the value of the note before it. A common mistake is that it adds one beat. That is because the dot is most commonly used after half notes. However, in 6/8 time, a quarter note is two beats.
