So, I'm wanting to move on to compose for symphony orchestras instead of just string orchestras. Now, this is a huge task. I know very little about what to give what in a symphony... I'm assuming there are some basic guidelines for composing for symphonies somewhere. What brass typically gets in a piece, woodwinds, strings, etc. What kinds of sounds for what parts in a piece. Does anyone know of any references for this?
