#beginquote# It's just a formality of writing. The whole note sustains through the entire measure (probably played with your pinky?) while your other fingers rest on beat one, then play three quarter notes. Think of it as two different instruments - the cello holds a note for 4 beats. The viola rests, then plays on beats 2 3 and 4. The whole note with quarter rest is a way of showing the two voices at the same time. You're right, it doesn't change the counting. Hope this helps! #endquote#
