#beginquote# The word "soprano" means "high" in Italian. Most mixed-voice choirs have four voice parts: Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass. Sopranos will sing the highest part. Occasionally, composers will split the soprano part, creating two parts that are intended to be sung by the soprano section. In such a circumstance, sopranos with the ability to sing the higher part are called "Soprano 1", and the rest are called "Soprano 2". All voice parts can be split in this way. In the choirs that I conduct, I audition 1's and 2's for each vocal part. Hope this helps! -Gary Ewer :) Learn the Essential Secrets of Songwriting: http://www.secretsofsongwriting.com #endquote#
