#beginquote# go to the main menu (so what is your fancy and click: learn to read music then click: types of notes The stems are just a kind of musical shorthand to help read music. as far as if the stem goes or down depends on the placement of the note. If the note is below the 3rd line they go up. If the note is above the 3rd line they go down. If the note is ON the 3rd line whatever the next note is usually determines what it will be. The "squiggly bit" are called flags or beams (depends on who taught you) 1 beam is a 8th note. 2 is a 16th note. 3 is a 32nd note. #endquote#
