#beginquote# the main difference is the ease of play. Extra light strings are a very thin guage wire, which makes the very flexible. there are some slight drawbacks to lighter strings. There is a loss of volume, and tone quality. However, with most acoustic guitars having built in electronics specifically designed for that guitar, this is not such a big factor anymore. I prefer light strings on an acoustic, and sometimes medium, and extra light on an electric guitar. There is one more benefit to lighter strings on an acoustic guitar, and that is the action can be lowered, thus making play even easier. The action on my Ovation and Ibanez is almost as close as many high quality electric guitars. This does require some technical ability to accomplish though, because the bridge, (saddle), needs to be adjusted, as well as the nut and sometimes the truss rod. I am a fragment of my imagination #endquote#
