#beginquote# taciturn is right; it's not necessarily about speed but the "feeling" of the music. Music in 3/4 is structured in groups of three, like STRAW-ber-ry STRAW-ber-ry, while music in 4/4 is more like EAT-a-do-nut EAT-a-do-nut. They "feel" different--for example, if you put STRAW-ber-ry in 4/4 it would be like STRAW-ber-ry straw-BER-ry straw-ber-RY and so on, with the emphasis every fourth syllable #endquote#
