#beginquote# if the dot is beside the note (not above) then that means you add half the original note value to the note. For instance, a dotted half note. A half note is 2 beats, so when there is a dot, and you add half that, you add one beat. That makes a dotted half note 3 beats long. A dotted quater would be a beat and a half. A dotted whole note would be 6 beats long, etc. #endquote#
