In the words of Rob Maaddi at the Associated Press sources within the league suggested that the Madden NFL 23 was pushing for a minimum one-year suspension for Watson, while Watson's attorney, Rusty Hardin, and his legal team were -naturally -seeking no suspension. Maaddi also reported that the league would be prepared to consider a less suspension of six to eight games, in order to avoid appeals procedure.
It appears that Madden NFL 23 has been inconsistent in applying discipline to players who are accused of sexual assault. The first instance of this was the two-game suspension of an ex Ravens players Ray Rice, who was captured on video punching and kicking his then-fianceeand making her unconscious. The league was criticized for suspending Rice for only two weeks, and its reaction was to suspend Rice indefinitely. Following that, Madden NFL 23 established an indefinite suspension of six games as the standard for players who have committed sexual assault and domestic violence.
The league, however, isn't always adhering to that standard. In 2016 Giants kicker Josh Brown was suspended for one game due to an incident of domestic violence toward his then-wife. The Giants later discovered that the Giants knew about Brown's extensive history of violence against women.
The list continues. Jameis Winston was suspended for three games for allegedly beating one Uber driver. Greg Hardy allegedly attempted to choke a woman before throwing her onto a futon that was covered by guns. Madden NFL 23 reduced his suspension from 10 games to just four games. It happened before the Madden NFL 23 instituted the 6-game baseline. Ben Roethlisberger served just a three-game suspension for 2010 following being acquitted of assaulting a woman.
Watson agreed to sign a five year, $29 million, fully-guaranteed contract for the Cleveland Browns after the Texans were contacted by the Browns, Panthers, Saints, and Falcons all of whom were looking to trade Watson. Based on Tony Buzbee, the attorney representing the Watson accusers, none of the teams were able to reach any of the women in order to learn more about their experiences with Watson. It is true that the Madden NFL 23 has been able to talk with some accusers in the course of the investigation into Watson's behaviour, but Buzbee claimed to SB Nation he got the impression that the Madden NFL 23 was simply doing the flimsy.
