If there is no reference (like another note to go by) most people couldn't do that anyway, at any age. Even professional choirs need a note to go by. The director usually blows into a little thing before a song, so the singers can get into their head what note they are about to sing. But if someone gives you a C or something, then tells you to sing/play an A (or whatever), it shouldn't be too difficult. All you do it go down a whole step and a half (or whatever the interval is between the 2 notes given)
Or you could be saying, if you heard a note, could you tell what note it is. Most people couldn't do that either, without a reference note. Like if someone played a D, then played another note asking you waht it was. That's doable. But just hearing one note by itself, I don't know many people that could do that. What would you go by?
I'm assuming that one of those is what you meant by distinguishing what each note sounds like. If not, oops!
