I don't know what kind of trumpets they used to have in the old days but I think they didn't have any valves or somthing like that. Oh and for that person with the trumpet problem, just take out the valves and all the slides from the trumpet and then soak the whole trumpet, except for the valves , in lukewarm water inside of a bathtub for about 20 minutes. Once you take it out, let it air dry from the inside and you should towel dry it from the outside. I have 2 trumpets myself and although I am a GIRL, I think I'm pretty darn good at it. Hope I helped. Oh and also grease everything good and oil everything good to.

Also, check and make sure the valves are put in correctly. If you put the wrong valve in, it will block all the holes = no air..

If your mouth piece is facing you then the numbers on the valves should be too.

They are right. One or more of your valves is in backwards. Most horns have the numbers facing the mouthpiece as Kate said. As for the old trumpets, there were many variations. The ancient ones were carved from shells or animal horns and used to send messages over distances. Later, diffent variations were developed. You can see a good pic of what came to be called a "natural trumpet" using this link: http://www.usd.edu/smm/pressler3.html
