I was paging though some assorted sheets of my old violin music. (It's been about 20 years since I took lessons, and I haven't touched it since, heh), and while I recognize most of what I saw, there was one thing that I didn't recognize. It's in one of the advanced songs. above the staff, it's the number 8, followed by a long section of dotted line, then a ninety degree turn down. I feel I should know what this means, but it just isn't coming to me.

Incidently, if it's written underthe notes then they are to be played an octave lower. It may also show up in the form of 8ve. But that is still the same as 8va or 8. You may also come across 'Con 8' or 'Con 8ve' under a note which means to play the written noteandthe note an octave below it together. ('Con' means with).
