Major keys are the most common, and usually have a more happy type sound to them. Minor keys often sound more depressing or sad.
For example, we'll use C major and A minor. They both have all the same notes, all naturals. Play a C scale, just start on C and go up to the C an octave higher. Then start the scale on A and work your way up to the next A. They are all the same notes, but the A minor scale sounds a little more... eerie, I guess you could say.
A major scale is characterized by having half steps between the the scale degrees 3 and 4, and 7 and 8.
A minor scale has half steps between the scale degrees of 2 and 3, and 5 and 6. (a scale degree is like, for instance in a C major scale C would be 1, D would be 2, etc)

To find the relative minor scale of a major scale (like A minor is the same as C major) just go 3 letters down from the major scale's first note. A is 3 notes down from C. F major would be the same as D minor.

Hope I've helped a little.

I think he wants to know the key and notes that match the pitch of the lyrics and the correct durations of the notes.
