My daughter is taking a music course and she is supposed to locate on the keyboard some such thing as D#4 (that may not be the exact note). What and where is that? She cannot find it in her book.

Go to http://www.shsu.edu/~music/files/music_theory.pdf and scroll down to the 2nd page(in pdf) to see what she needs. In this case it's the D# DIRECTLY above Middle C. Middle C is designated C4 so D#4 would be the D# in that register.
