I am retired and began learning the piano and keyboard one year ago. Yes, it is trying at times - only because I want to know so much. I find it quite exciting. Is there anyone who started rather late also and how are you progressing?

Welcome to the forum

I was 60 when I took my first piano lesson and still at it now. Yep, there have been ups and downs, never thought I'd ever be able to read and make sense of what seemed at first to be a lot of round circles and lines.

It is great to be able to play music, so much to learn, all I can say is "enjoy the journey" and welcome to the "late starters club".

You might want to check out www.pianoworld.com and take a look at the adult beginner forum.

Hi...Well its Ok, you've taken up a great hobbie. I myself started playing the Bass Guitar when I was 17yrs old...I then played with a Band. But as we got older, we kind of went our separate ways and I put down the Bass Guitar for a long ,long time. I'am now 58 yrs old and retired. So I decided to start learning all over again. No one is ever too old to learn.

Way to go. I gotta' tell you guys that you make me feel much better. I started playing the bass guitar four years ago when I was eighteen, but even with the compliments I get, I always know people who blow me away at it, so I always feel like a late starter even though I jam as much as possible. Reading your posts makes me feel better about that because you guys are having as much fun as I am, which helps me to realize that I'm not competing for anything. Thanks, you guys really took an imagined load off my shoulders.

I was approaching my 70th birthday and thought if I didn't get started with the piano I would literally run out of time. I am 73 now and I get a half hour lesson each week at a very successful piano retailer downtown with my 85 year old teacher. She is amazing, Wurlitzer Corp. sent her to Columbia U. on their dime for her masters degree. She still travels all over the USA judging contestants at major events. So if you have not yet started, stop what your doing, call a music store, find a teacher and go for it. Pianovern
