how do I know which way the tail on a half and quarter note extend when writing them on a treble cleff?

If it's below the B line the tail goes up, if it's above the B line, the tail goes down. If it's on the B line, the tail goes up. Hope this helps!

the other comment explained it all but if its on the B line it can go either up or down it doesn't matter
basically that was explained by that comment but if its on the B line it can go either down or up
