This is a topic that has bugged me for a long time now. It is the topic of people teaching themselves how to play music. If you really want to learn how to play ANY kind of musical instrument, the ONLY way to TRULY learn it is by seeking the help of a QUALIFIED teacher.
To put this into perspective, think about it this way: would you want to be treated by a doctor (or would you trust your own child being treated by a doctor) who learned how to practice medicine by reading articles on WebMD and watching videos of surgical procedures on You Tube?? NO!!!
Would you bring your car to a mechanic who learned how to repair cars by reading the Haynes repair manuals and The Complete Idiot's Guide to Car Repair?? NO!!!
I hope this does not sound rude or offensive to anyone, but I truly hope people will think twice before saying "I am going to spend $300 on a guitar and then teach myself by reading a book." IT WON'T WORK!!! Sure you may be able to strum chords over Margaritaville, maybe even play a killer solo using a minor pentatonic scale, but do you really understand what you are playing? Could you convey what you are playing theoretically to other members of the band in which you are playing? If you show up at a club and ask the band to sit in, can you tell them in what key you are playing? If the band says "this tune is a circle in F" would you be able to follow?
Again, I hope I don't seem rude, but this is a topic about which I am very passionate, and hopefully this will change the mind of some people who are under the impression that they can successfully teach themselves music. I could go into the psychology behind this subject, but I think I have already written enough words in this post. Thank you and have a great day/night.

I hope that everyone who wants to learn to play a instrument follows your good advice.
There is so much to learn - a good teacher will help point the way.

Thank you bandirector for saying this so eliquently! I am a music teacher myself, and am constantly very frustrated by this fact. I understand that very rarely, phenominal musicians (a.k.a. Mozart, etc.) play and understand the theory behind music with very little instruction, but even Mozart had music teachers. There were people who taught him how the language of music notation actually worked.
I only wish that the information and data behind reasoning like ours were well known and respected, rather than scoffed at as stuffy and closed minded.
