Am I retarded or just plain stupid? How can a person read not only the noted but words at the same time. This doesn't take into account all the other signs that show up like sharps, flats, dynamic signs etc. What's the secret? Help! I love music and play great by ear but feel inadequate to play and read music with people who read proficiently. Thanks, Dave

Hi Dave, It takes a long time to read everything at the same time. I'm learning to read music, I play guitar and sing in a choir, and sometimes the music moves so fast that I can only read the first verse. Stick with it, and you'll get it.

I am a fragment of my imagination

Most of the time in rehearsals the director may try and attempt to sight read the music to the fullest. After this train wreck s/he then may move to singing la on the correct pitches. Once the notes and rhythms are learned then s/he will add the words.
