I guess it is not easy to understand who you are according to the music you listen. but,.... but everything you like is a point that show something about you.just some information. not to judgment.

My daughter has played the piano since she was in 4th grade and is now graduating from highschool. She too, has said that music defines her. She went through a 1 1/2 year time frame that she was very depressed and felt totally misunderstood. She listened to the same harder rock and "emo" music you are talking about because it "defined who she was". I think that when she was listening to this music that she became what the music was instead of the music becoming who she was. The lyrics are generally depressing in that genre of music. She, through tired of being depressed all the time, started listening to and writing her own music. I can't tell you how much her life has changed, she has goals and dreams again, some of them already accomplished! Her personality is up beat and happy. She looks for the good in everyone instead of literally hating preps and other groups of people who she thought didn't understand her or her friends. I know this is probably not what you were expecting to hear as a reply but I really do wish you the best and pray you find what you are looking for. Teenage years are hard enough without having your "emotions" messed with by a particular genre of depressing music.
