Does anybody have any tips on forming string arrangements for original music?

Try to write it out in in SATB format or SSATB format (depending on how many violins you're writing for). Then you just re-write the parts with the different instruments in mind, i.e. is that a good range for a cello? Can a Viola make that skip? Do I need all the voices playing at this time?

In addition, are there instruments that go together really well for example, the cello and flute?

I like Flute with Viola. Cello with Clarinet. Piano with anything.
