For reeed if any body want(oboes). You can buy a fiberreed which last like 1 month than rusty old old wood, but if you want a nice music(like in concert), the wood ones soung better than fiberreed(plastic). If you want to listen to oboe music,go to youtube.com and type Ennio Morricone or Gabriel Oboe. Plus I thnk oboe sound better and it is a complicated instrument, It is father of basson.

The Oboe is more unique and personally I want to learn it more, but the clarinet is mellower and much easier to play. It's better to start with the clarinet any way so learn clarinet (which is cheaper to buy of rent for sure!) and then see how you feel after you get better. (That's what I'm doing.)

I would suggest a person considering whether to play clarinet or oboe or bassoon find out what sorts of teachers are available for each. If you have a clearly better teacher for one -- or a teacher that you can really "click" with -- go for that instrument. You'll make the best progress on the instrument that you enjoy playing most. However, it takes a lot of guts to play the bassoon. In some places they are known as faggots. How would you like to have to go through life telling people that you blow faggots for a living?

I play oboe and clarinet, and I'm the only oboe player in our school. We have about 45 clarinet players in grades 6-8. I prefer oboe because it's more fun to play and I think it sounds better.

Maybe you should try both. I did and I liked them both. I actually still play both now. The only problem is that oboes can be really expensive. Mine was $2000! I recommend you rent both and stick with which ever one you like better.

I think you should definitely play the oboe. i do, and it is not that hard. plus, if you want to do something like honor band, they will more likely accept you; because there are so many clarinet players. through experience, clarinets generally either sound fuzzy or squeaky and rarely sound really good.
