I have what appears to be a japanese instrument but I don't have any idea what it is. It is rectangular in shape, approx. 2 feet in length, with 4 strings and what appears to be a keyboard type addition above the strings. It is light weight, black, with a scene and japanese writing painted on top. I have photos of it if anyone is interested in helping me to identify what it is - just email me and I will send you photos. Thanks.

That sounds like a Shamisen. Look it up and see if that is it.
