What particular thing makes the woodwinds, woodwinds and not brass?

Brass sound is produced by the vibrating of the lip/s. Woodwinds are not. Historically, most woodwinds started out being made of wood, Flute later being made of metal. Sax is the exception. Saxes have always been metal, but because they use a reed like a clarinet, they are in the WW family.
