I know the horizontal lines that appear half way up a note mean you have to play a few of that note the line appears on, but how can I tell how many to play for each note with a line?

And what is the line called?!

1 line through a half note means to play 2 quarters. 2 lines means to play 4 eigths.

1 line through a quarter means to play 2 eigths. 2 lines means to play 4 sixteenths.
