Could anyone please tell me what the 4th key on a piccolo trumpet is for?

I'm studying to become a music educator, so lets see if you understand and see how I'm doing 
First of all, the piccolo trumpet (which is pitched in Bb normally sometimes A) sounds an octave higher than the normal big Bb trumpet everyone thinks of. So you use the same fingerings for the octave below the sounding pitch. Meaning.. If you have a 4th line "d" you play valves 1-3 (same as the "d" below the staff on the regular Bb trumpet.)
The fourth valve can be used 2 different ways. The fourth vavle is the same as valves 1-3 combined. Therefore, you can play fourth line "d" with just the fourth valve. This comes in handy when trilling or to help improve intonation. Some players play the fourth valve with the first finger of their left hand. The fourth valve held down also makes the horn sound a perfect fourth lower. Without the 4th valve the lowest note on picc is an F#. With the fourth valve you will be able to play the C# below that.
I.e.
F = 1 -4
E = 1-2-4
Eb = 2-3-4
D = 1-3-4
C# = 1-2-3-4

ooh thanks. i recently got a pic and got a nasty shock when i discovered it had a forth valve- i didn't have a clue what to do with it.
great information there, i should be up and tooting in no time!
