i have herd that yamaha's are good. and i plain to get one. but really it is about what you are use to playing and how far you want to go with your playing. if you want a good sound like a mellow pich you can get a silver headjoint or if you want a dark pich you cant get a gold headjoint
it all really depends on what you want.

Yamahas are not really to good. You should try Bach or selment. The music store that I got my trumpet from only uses the yamahas for a loner when you get your instrument tuned up.

There are several goo brands of flute.
I prefer Geimeinhardt simply because they only make flutes so thier attention to detail is important to me. Yamaha does make a good flute although I don't care for it. Many teachers and professional do like Yamaha. Older (pre-2000) Artley and Armstrongs were pretty good. Selmer has purchased Conn so the quality of Artley and Armstrong is getting better so I am told. What you need to do is go to a music store and try out several different brands. A lot of what determines what you buy is your personal tastes. Also your performing level will make a difference.
