Pardon me for correcting you. You said "oil" so I assumed you meant "oil".
-------
trumpetgeek53,
Your band director uses what he's been trained to use to repair your instrument if it gets stuck. You should not try to fix it yourself because (I assume) you have not been trained to repair it.
I would suggest not using valve oil on your tuning slide anymore. Valve oil is meant to be used for valves, not slides. Spend the $5 and get yourself some slide grease.

DO NOT USE VALVE OIL ON YOUR TUNING SLIDES!!! It is causing your problem. It is one thing to use it to free a stuck slide, but once it is out,
Here is how to do it . . . . .
1. First, you need to clean any corrosion off your slide. This is crucial. I use a toothbrush and toothpaste if needed. The slide needs to be cleaned, rinsed and dryed. (DO NOT USE STEEL WOOL, or any other harsh scrubber or you will remove metal as well).
2. Once clean, you can use any number of products to keep it functioning properly. I us a set of lubricants by Hetman. They are synthetic and have different formulas for each slide as well as several for valves.
There are lots of different brands of tuning slide grease. (don't use the trombone slide cream . . . it wears off too quickly for this purpose)
You can use regular vasaline too. It works great! You don't need too much, and just wipe of the excess.
3. You need to use the slide to keep it lubed. Don't just leave it in the same spot all of the time. Push it all the way in, and then pull back out, then set it for good pitch when tuning each time you play.
When it needs it, repeat the process.
Good Luck!!!
GOOOOOOROOOOOO
