The best clarinet is the one that works best for you. These types of "debates" go on with every instrument, but I really think that it doesn't matter the brand that you play, as long as you are getting the sound out of it that you want, and that it is the most comfortable with you. An example from my instrument would be: which is better Holtons or Conns? Well, one player might handle a Holton better because their lung capacity is better suited for a Holton, whereas another player might do better on a Conn, which requires more air, because they have bigger lungs. This doesn't mean either instrument is any better than the other. It simply means that they are different, and that one player does better on one, while another player does better on another.
So the question for you is: Do you like you Buffet? Have you tried playing other brands of clarinets to compare them against what you have? If you haven't, then get out there and see if there's anything you like better. If you have, and you still like your Buffet the best, then my conclusion would be that the Buffet is the best clarinet (for you).
Hope this helps. Sorry for my long-windedness.

It was the performance horn of the Asst. Principal clarinet of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. It is wonderful. I also play on a Brad Bayne handmade mouthpiece, a Vandoren Optimum ligature, Zonda reeds, 4.5 and a Robert Scott 66mm barrel. Try out some of those products. They are all really good!

He has a buffet R13. He took off his mouthpiece and put it on my cheaper ebonite clarinet...and he still sounded wonderful. So...I wouldn't bother too much with the big names. All the best.

That's not to say a new would be bad. Just not as good as yours. As earlier posters have said, play what you like, not what others think you should play. If I were you I would pay CLOSE attention to your private teacher. I knew a trumpet player who could make a total piece of junk sound like a Bach Strad. Often times it's the technique and training, not the instrument.

Skatergirl, please use punctuation. It read like a James Joyce novel.
I'm not trying to be mean. It's just easier to read. MUCH LIKE ALL CAPS MEANS SHOUTING. No punctuation is like rambling.

| posted: 6/9/2005 at 10:30:43 PM ET ok i loved my buffet clarinet ( by the way i play oboe and i don't think im better than the clarinet players at all (maybe cause i play clarinet too) i dunno?) when i went to buy my new instrument i tryed out tons of instuments ( i was used to playing on a wood clarinett and i needed a plastic one for marching band) i had the theory that u can't beat a wood clarinet so we asked them what was in their option the BEST and they gave me the buffet so ya kno thats what i think is the best. Just make sure that it is the level of instrument ( beg. int. pro.) that fits you.
