Have to say that I really was more interested in watching and listening to the guitar musicians. They really have quite a bit of work to do. So many different rhythms, their fingers were really flying, don't know how they were able to do it. In some cases they were keeping different rhythyms with their feet.
Toonz, thought of you and it must be tricky to find the right fingering for both hands, how do you do it? It was a fun evening.

My guitar teacher can play flamenco guitar. I just listen and watch in awe and think to myself that I'll NEVER be able to play like that. NEVER. You should see the sheet music. Yikes.
Then I remember that he has been playing for many many years and that he also still takes lessons. I shall keep in mind that I have to focus on my own goals not someone else's. I guess there is always more to learn no matter how advanced you are.
I found it funny that you ended up paying more attention to the musicians than you did to the dancers. I can tell it is the music that speaks to you. It is, without a doubt, a very big part of who you are.
My hands are cooperating more and more each day. I was just thinking yesterday how my fingers can find certain strings now without even thinking about it. Even my left hand is starting to get into the groove.
Glad you enjoyed the show. Wish I could have been there.
Cheers.

Registered: 11/18/2004 | posted: 5/8/2005 at 12:13:53 AM ET Music has always been there for me - my father always played the piano at home. When I was little he coached singers and always was my mother's accompaniest.
It's better late that never, I guess, taking piano lessons has opened a new wounderful world for me and given me a greater appreciation of music and those who make it happen. My head is ahead of what my fingers can do. I hear what my teacher wants, it's just being able to do it. It's getting there, have to say. Anyway, it's fun to be learning to do what I've always wanted to do. Dance was my focus for many years and music is now my focus if that makes sense.
It must be great to hear your teacher play. I know that I really enjoy hearing my teacher play. She doesn't play much, but when she does it's really something special.

Registered: 3/28/2005 | posted: 5/8/2005 at 12:46:17 PM ET Hey toonz, never say never. Flamenco is a lot of finger work as well as the rythem. It's like playing two parts at the same time! I wanted to learn to play bass a long time ago, and didn't have a bass guitar, so I used the last 4 stings on my acoustic, and began finger picking bass lines and chords. After I got a bass guitar' I continued to finger pick on guitar using all 6 strings. Now when I play chords, I finger pick through all the notes in the chord, plus the bass notes. This gives a two dimensional flavor to the music, and this style is similar to Flamenco. I,m not really into it too much, but I have dabbled with the Malaguena, which is quite challenging to play. I hope I didn,t butcher that too much. I'm not good in Spanish spelling. Give it a try, you might find it interesting.

I shouldn't be so negative and I do try NOT to be so negative but I would be lying if I said that I was never hard on myself. Truth is that's probably the thing I need to practice the most. Shutting up that voice inside of my head that keeps saying, "You can't do this." "You're too old." Sometimes that voice gets a little to loud for my liking. I take to heart the line that follows Pusscat's posts about 50 percent of this game being 90 percent mental. I know it all too well.
But, that's why I'm here at this site. It helps me to quiet that silly voice. I gotta do whatever it takes to help myself because I don't want to talk myself out of this. I enjoy it way too much.

Guess it keeps us from paying attenion to "little pesky voices". I keep telling myself "I can do this" .
I agree with you and pussycat, it is mostly in the head the rest is work. Let's keep at it.

Registered: 3/28/2005 | posted: 5/11/2005 at 10:07:44 PM ET Just hang in there. I almost gave up guitar because of carpal tunnel in both wrists. Instead, I said no I'm not going to let this take away about the only thing I really enjoy doing. I was taking my wife to a chiropractor weekly for her back, and finally I asked him if there was anything he could do for me. He started by adjusting my wrists and massage therepy, and now I get cold laser treatments and electric stim, and it has worked wonders. I can play stuff I hadn't been able to play for years. there is always a way to accomplish that which you really want to do. Keep on strummin', Don
