I would think it would depend on the piece you are playing and how you are most comfortable playing it.
I play the Horn, and sometimes run into the problem of what fingering to use for what notes, since you can play just about every note on a horn with a number of different fingering combinations. The way I do it is to examine the notes before and after the note in question, and most of the times I get my answer from that. Whatever combination of fingerings for the progression of notes in the phrase is the easiest to handle - that's what I'll most likely do.

And i'm always listening to the 1st violins geting yelled at about this so heres an answer. MOVE YOUR FIRST FINGER WHERE YOUR 4TH FINGER IS ON THE FINGER BOARD AND THEN YOU ARE IN SECOND POSISTION REPEAT THIS AND YOU WILL BE IN THIRD. YOUR WELCOME
