I have always been a singer, but have never learned to read music. Any tips for a basic beginner, and also can a 50-something woman begin a new venture in singing?50-something

There are also numerous other web sources if you try searching for them. While you're learning, it would probably be handy to have some sort of keyboard with you, so you can test out the notes you are singing to make sure you are singing the right note. It takes a lot of ear training to be able to look at notes and sight sing from it.. knowing the intervals between notes and all. I'm currently taking an AP music theory class in school, and I'm going to be learning how to sight sing, even though I'm not a singer. I've been playing the cello for 6 years and the piano for about 3. Looking at notes and singing, to me, is much more difficult than looking at notes and playing on an instrument. Reason being on an instrument, you know how many fingers you put down on what string or what keys on a piano, etc., but with your voice you are just blindly guessing. Of course, if you're properly trained it probably wouldn't be blind guesses anymore

You may be having trouble with notes or rhythms or both. The best way to learn to sight sing notes is to work on intervals. There are many good method books which are systematic and take you through excercises one interval at a time. Your vocal teacher should have you working out of one. Ask him or her. If no success, try a college book store. They will have one.
