Michael, I will try to help you although I have only been playing an instrument for just over a year. When all the different musicians play a piece of music together as a group or band..they all mostly have different parts to play depnednding on the instrument. Everyone must therefore count the notes in the bar they are playing. The music in common times (C) is 4/4. The bottom note tells us there will be 4 crotchets..(or quarter notes in America.) The top number tells you how many crotchets in the bar. So....4/4 is four crotchets in the bar . Everyone should be counting...regardless of the instrument they play....1-2-3-4.....1-2-3-4-..Now there are variations...but I would suggest you look at the internet..maybe someone will give you a music site to check out. I am keeping this short...but perhaps a combination of other answers will help you. All the best, Mgt x
