When is it called a stave, and when is it called a staff? Is staves the plural of staff? I've seen stave used in the singular form though... so I was just wondering.

it depends on the instrument? In that case, violin, viola, cello, bass, piano

staves is the plural form of staff...it doesn't depend on the instrument.

I didn't think it did. And whoa, this post is ancient. Thanks for the info. though. I just swear I've heard stave used as singular though. Oh well!
