i'm 12yrs old, going on to 13 and i have never played a musical instrument but all my friends have started from an early age. i have decided to learn an instrument but i don't know what to choose. what are some good choices for beginners? i am thinking of the saxophone but i'm not sure if it'd be too hard for a beginner.

The only limitation to starting a horn is how much time you out into it. The more you practice, the better you'll be. I've had students start on every instrument.
As far as what to play. Your band director at your school will help you in every way to help get you on the horn you can be the most successful with. Talk to him/her and get their advice.

"to hard for a beginner" is really kind of a silly statement if you think about it. The greatest instumentalists in the world all had to start somewhere, right? They were all beginners at one time or another. Maintube's advise is good - talk with your band director and see what's right for you. If you get into an instrument that really doesn't work for you, you can always switch to something else.

The only thing I would say is that if you do take up the sax, please don't follow maintube's lead and call it a "horn" because it's not a horn at all - it's not even a brass instrument. Call it what it is - a sax.

I meant "horn" in its general sense. In instrumental music the Horn (capitol H) is the French Horn.

HornSupremecy, you must play French Horn. Only a Horn purist would argue about the use of "horn" in its general sense. LOL

You got it - I'm a horn player! We are picky about that, aren't we? I even hate it when people call a trumpet or a trombone a horn! It's just not right! Although, at least I can understand where they're coming from. Calling a sax a horn makes no sense to me at all.... like I said, it's not even a brass instrument. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to try to get over it. After all, there's no way I'm going to get people to stop saying it!

I try to avoid using the use of "horn" in band unless I am speaking to the "Horns".
I don't even call them French Horns that much anymore.

I'm a percussionist. I hate being called a drummer, unless I'm playing drum set.

Say, you know how to make trombone sound like a Horn?

Put your hand in the bell and play wrong notes.

LOL LOL LOL
