As far as what to play. Your band director at your school will help you in every way to help get you on the horn you can be the most successful with. Talk to him/her and get their advice.

The greatest instumentalists in the world all had to start somewhere, right? They were all beginners at one time or another. Maintube's advise is good - talk with your band director and see what's right for you. If you get into an instrument that really doesn't work for you, you can always switch to something else.
The only thing I would say is that if you do take up the sax, please don't follow maintube's lead and call it a "horn" because it's not a horn at all - it's not even a brass instrument. Call it what it is - a sax.

It's just not right! Although, at least I can understand where they're coming from. Calling a sax a horn makes no sense to me at all.... like I said, it's not even a brass instrument. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to try to get over it. After all, there's no way I'm going to get people to stop saying it!

I don't even call them French Horns that much anymore.

Say, you know how to make trombone sound like a Horn?
Put your hand in the bell and play wrong notes.
LOL LOL LOL
