i have music that has a mordant (looks like a wavy line only the parts of the wave are straight, not curved)with a line through it. does this mean to play the note, then the note 1/2 step below it, and then the original note again? also, what is this notation called?

I believe that means to do a tremelo with the notes involved. Like shake them back and forth quickly...what your describe doing is a trill with the note below or above so, if there is a chord involved I usually rock it out. Tremble the notes. Hope that helps.
