I inherited a very nice keyboard, so I decided to fulfill a childhood dream and learn to play. But where do I start? I have never played any instruments before. Do I need to learn to read music? I have no ambitions to play professional but I just want to learn some songs to show off at parties

You will really want to get yourself a private teacher. Some good books to start with are the Alfred Electronic Keyboard series.

Thank you for your reply. I will look in to the books you mentioned. What I was wondering about though is if I really need to learn how to read music. I've heard stories about famous musicians that can't read a single note.

There have been many famous rock/jazz/blues musicians who could not read music. There have been very few "famous" as in legitimate performers/composers who could not read music IMO.
By legitimate I mean Classical/session/wind band/ orchestral musicians
