I'm playing the classical guitar and I've wanted to play the cello too. A teacher told me that my right thumbnail is distracting the handling of the bow, and he said that that'll also cause some technical problems in the future playing. But I asked several folks who are playing the cello and they don't find any problems when they keep the fingernails (and thumbnails). Please advice.

just keep that short and you shouldn't have a problem.
