I have just been told by my daughter's flute instructor that we need to start thinking about a new, better, open-holed flute. She currently has the basic Selmer beginner flute. What would you experienced folks suggest for a reasonable step-up that might last for a while? Cost is an issue.

Thanks.

I like Geimeinhardt Flutes. They make some lower cost open hole flutes that are very good. I like this brand because flutes are all they make. They hold up well to younger students ,yet are very playable. You can look for a used one or check out Woodwind/Brasswind. Their web site is www.wwbw.com

Well an Artley brand is sufficient and the cost is not high. Go to your local music store and I'm sure that any store employee would help you find a good resonably priced flute.

I have no problem with older Artleys or Armstrongs. However after Conn, Artley, and Armstrond were all bought up by UMI the quality of thier workmanship has suffered. Geimeinhardt is just as inexpensive as Artley. Fro example I checked with Woodwind-Brasswind. they have a Model 3 Gein. for $349.00 and for $50.00 more can get in with a B-foot (which I would recommend, Her teacher is probably going to want that also.), a Model 3SH for $579.00 (not available with a B-foot), or a Model 3S for $749.00 (also $50.00 more a B-foot). Look at www.wwbw.com for phone numbers and other instrument options. We don't really buy that many from them because our local store provides such good repair service we like to use him as much as possible. We have had students buy from them.
