It is a conical bore instrument where the trumpet in cylindrical. cornet has a mellower sound than trumpet because of how it is made. Conical means that it gets slightly and gradually larger from the lead pipe (where the mouthpeice goes in) to the bell flare. Cylindrical stays the same size from the lead pipe to the bell flare. The word cornet is based on a early form of brass instrument.
