Which system is better (and why) for teaching singers - solfegge or 1-8 numbers?

I would have to say solfege.. reasons? because (unlike numbers) they are all one syllable.. it's odd to sing a quarter note, but have to say "sev-en" making it sound like two eigths. Also, numbers do not allow for things like flats and sharps.. (so la TE do.. etc..)

For years, I would have told you that numbers are the way to go..because you don't have to learn any system of singing (new syllables)---but after teaching and learning from both methods...it mUST be SOLFEGE....from that you understand the RELATIONSHIPS between steps/pitches...you understand the colors of different intervals and it really gain inside into "tonic"--and in both major and minor....
Numbers are not that beneficial

For understanding theory, numbers are better. They lay the groundwork for understanding scales and chords.

Solfege and numbers are both an attempt to be able to use one set of words to represent different notes within the scale in any key.

A singer should be proficient in both, but numbers will help you understand more about music and how it works than solfege will.

GOOOOOOROOOOOO
