The piano is classified as both a string and percussion instrument!

The piano makes sound with a hammer striking the string. It is a member of the percussion section. When string players use pizzacato or collegno, they are also percussive in nature.

Well, it's both. The strings are hit by hammers to make your sound. It's both string and percussion. And the only instrument that is BOTH.

If piano is classified as both percussive and string (I can see reasons for both) then what family would you classify the accordian? Why not make the distinction it is of the "keyboard" (sort of miscellaneous) family?

Keyboard instruments are often classified as percussion instruments because they play a rhythmic role in some music. However, most keyboard instruments are not true members of the percussion family because their sound is NOT produced by the vibration of a membrane or solid material.

Sound is produced on the piano by small hammers striking strings. The hammers are controlled mechanically and strike the strings when the player's hands press the piano keys.

What do you all think?

i always thought the piano was in the percussion family and i have been in music for 9 years, but my new music teacher just informed me that it is in the keyboard family. i have never heard of that before.
