#beginquote# If my Music Theory and History memory is correct, one of the reasons that the stems at around the middle line, B in the treble clef goes down is aesthetic. Since the original music manuscripts were hand drawn, as imnidiot pointed out the stems are less crowded and so therefore more pleasing to the eye which makes it easier to read.
