#beginquote# Hello there, I am 47 and started to play alto sax last year. Apparently there are quite a few people who start even in their 70's..so don't let the age put you off. I started on alto purely because I read it was the smaller one... and that most people started on it. I guess there's nothing to stop you starting on tenor...unless anyone else comes with any reasons why not. If I had to teach myself music..or an instrument...I wouldn't be where I am. I think you may be able to learn to play the notes if you persevere...but I think it would be a nightmare to learn all the rest involved about reading music without a qualified teacher. I can only speak for myself when I say...I want to know everything...yesterday! I am always asking questions......making up problems sometimes when there is no problem. I am pernickety.....I delve into things too much.....thank goodness I have a teacher to answer my questions....and also to tell me when something isn't worth splitting hairs over. I could go on.....but my answer boils down to....go for it....but get a teacher. #endquote#
