#beginquote# Hello, My name is LaDonna and I am a junior at Pacific Lutheran University, studying to be a junior high/middle school band director. We received a philosophy assignment in my Founations of Music Ed. class and were told that it's not cheating to ask other music teachers what they would do if they were in this situation. The details are as followed(summarized) and this is all hypothetical. This past spring, your new superintendent made some changes: 1) Due to budget restraints, elementary string and band programs were eliminated and the teachers of those classes were reassigned to different schools to teach different grades, outside of their specialty. 2) There are no longer any music or fine arts coordinators in your school district. 3) Elementary schools will now have a 25 minute general music class once a week, no strings or band. Our job is to put together a handout to give to our superintendent and school board to save the music program including the following aspects: summary of our department's philosophy of music education, clear short- and long-term suggestions for change, and a plan to put these changes in action in the district. Once again, this is not a real situation that we are dealing w/. Though, in some districts, others may be coping w/ this very problem, which is very sad to think about. I appreciate any help and opinions given. Thank you for your time and God Bless. LaDonna #endquote#
